ArcelorMittal uses XCarb in new office

Luxembourg-based metals producer ArcelorMittal says 95 percent of the steel being used to build its new 21-story headquarters building will consist of its recycled-content, low-carbon XCarb-branded steel.

ArcelorMittal intends for the building to serve as a showcase for the unique role that steel can play in sustainable construction. The firm says the steel structure for the first 8 of the 21 stories designed for the building are in place, with the edifice on track to be ready for use by ArcelorMittal employees in 2027.

“The building’s exoskeleton is being built with XCarb recycled and renewably produced steel, which is made in Luxembourg with 100 percent recycled steel content in an electric arc furnace (EAF), using 100 percent renewable energy,” ArcelorMittal says.

In total, the building will contain more than 14,000 metric tons of steel, 95 percent of which will be XCarb-branded product made at the firm’s Belval and Differdange complex in Luxembourg.

The metals producer has been seeking several certification statuses as part of the project, including Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM) Exceptional certification.

“In terms of steel and glass architecture, the materials available today are materials that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, a Bauhaus Master [architect], would have dreamed of," Pierre Engel, head of ArcelorMittal’s headquarters construction project, said at a late September event in Luxembourg. "They include our much-admired low carbon-emissions steel, generating long spans and slender columns, but also amazing glass, which brings natural light and exceptional insulation to the building.”
