Chinese automaker BYD is likely to strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia through expansions in India, Thailand and Vietnam, Kallanish notes.
BYD has recently shipped 304 of its Q1R electric heavy-duty vehicles to Indian multinational Adani Group's four ports - Enmomre, Katupalli, Hazira and Mundra. The vehicles are expected to arrive gradually by the end of February and operate as port tractors.
According to BYD, Adani Group will continue to place orders from BYD and will put about 400 electric tractors into operations in 2023. Adani Group plans to realise sustainable and zero-emission port operation in 2025 through full electrification of its port tractors.
Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD Asia Pacific's sales department, says: "The large-scale adoption of BYD's green new energy technologies at Adani Group's ports ... has significant meaning for business development in India and the entire Asia Pacific area. This is an important starting point for our department in overseas electric truck business."
BYD says in its recent statement it will deepen its collaboration with its partner - Thailand's local dealership Rêver Automobile.
At the same time, BYD just shipped 800 Atto 3 from Shanghai Port to Thailand. Between 1 November and 12 December, BYD Atto 3 received orders of 10,305 units in Thailand.
It announced previously it will start the operation of a 150,000 vehicles/year EV assembly plant in Thailand.
In addition, according to an anonymous source from Reuters, BYD plans to establish an auto parts factory in Vietnam to supply its planned EV assembly plant in Thailand. The investment of this auto parts factory will exceed $250 million, and the construction will start before the middle of this year, according to this source.
