Salzgitter expands widths for HDG dual phase steels

German steelmaker Salzgitter has widened the range of dimensions of its galvanised dual phase steels, it tells Steel Business Briefing. Its strip plant Salzgitter Flachstahl can now roll gauges of up to 2.5mm in widths of more than 1,610mm.

These dimensions could not be achieved until now, as the strip was either too wide for the plant’s vertical hot-dip galvanising line or too thick for its horizontal HDG line.

The expansion of the size range required changes in the chemical composition of the steel, to adapt the material to the heating power of the annealing furnace, as well as adjustments to the technical equipment, Salzgitter says. It upgraded the drive and the gearing of the skin pass rolling mill, and adjusted the strength of the shears to handle thicker gauges.

Only a few European producers are capable of making HDG dual phase strip thicker than 2mm and wider than 1,610mm, Salzgitter claims.
