The Philippines' local industry regulator said last Friday (March 11) that the country will have around 12 new metallic mines start commercial operation this year, most of which are nickel projects.
After Indonesia banned nickel ore exports from 2020, the Philippines has become the largest supplier of nickel ore for China.
According to statistics, the Philippines produced around 386,400 tons of nickel last year, growing by 17% year on year, hitting the highest level in six years.
Wilfredo Moncano, the director of the Philippine Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), said that the mining industry’s medium-term outlook is optimistic unless the Russia-Ukraine conflict spreads to Asia and disrupts trade.
