Japan will impose sanctions on Russia targeting semiconductor exports, Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Friday after G7 leaders agreed to punish Moscow economically for invading Ukraine.
“We will sanction exports to Russian military-related organisations and exports to Russia of general-purpose goods such as semiconductors," he said.
Leading chip manufacturer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will probably stop shipments to Russian automotive producers at the request of the United States.
According to Russian media, experts note that in the current conditions there is a risk of a complete stop in the supply of electronic components from Southeast Asia.
TSMC press offices did not respond before deadline to a Kallanish request for comments.
US authorities are demanding that TSMC cease cooperation with Russian contractors. Domestic companies have been notified of this by the Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Digital Development.
Earlier on Thursday, the US Department of Commerce said that sanctions will affect the semiconductors exports to Russia.
Russia is ready for import substitution, said the press service of Russian Ministry of Industry and Trade.
"The Russian Federation has been implementing import substitution programs since 2014 and during this time, all algorithms have been built to respond to technological challenges that may arise, including as a result of disruption of global supply chains for objective reasons, and as a result of the imposition of sanctions," the ministry said. "Foreign products in critical industries have been consistently replaced in recent years by products manufactured in Russia and the EAEU countries, currently the emphasis is on import substitution of raw materials and components. Therefore, in principle, we are now ready for any development of events, the state will spare no effort and means to support for domestic producers.”
