The Directorate General of Foreign Trade of India has allowed the imports of metallic waste and scrap from six countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the EU. These countries were exempted from the pre-shipment Inspection Certificate (PSIC), while the cargo is permitted only by being cleared through Chennai, Tuticorin, Kandla, JNPT, Mumbai, Krishnapatnam, Mundra, Kattupalli, Hazira, and Kamarajar.
The consignments from these six regions will be accompanied by a certificate from the supplier or scrap yard authority to confirm that they don’t contain any radioactive materials or explosives. However, these consignments will be inspected for radiation and explosives through portal monitors and container scanners at these ports.
Trans-shipments will not be allowed through these regions. The imports of metallic waste and scrap through the remaining eight ports in India will be subject to PSIC, regardless of country of origin.
