US auto producer General Motors is expanding commercial opportunities for its proprietary HYDROTEC fuel cell platform in a bid to displace gas and diesel generators, Kallanish learns from a company statement.
The platform will be at the heart of several new initiatives, including a mobile power generator for fast-charging electric vehicles, a fixed generator for retail fueling stations, and a palletised generator for military use.
GM will produce the fuel cells in Brownstown, Michigan, at its joint venture facility with Honda. Estimated output ranges from 60-600 kilowatts.
The flexibility of the platform is evident in its ability to function as a totally mobile, semi-mobile, and fixed charging solution, the company says. It also dovetails neatly with GM’s EV expansion plans, plugging the gap between EV availability and charging availability, says HYDROTEC business executive director Charlie Freese.
“Our energy platform expertise with Ultium vehicle architectures and propulsion components and HYDROTEC fuel cells can expand access to energy across many different industries and users, while helping to reduce emissions often associated with power generation,” Freese says.
Utah’s Renewable Innovations will produce the mobile generators using GM’s fuel cell cubes. It will also head up the retail fueling station fixed generator project. GM will develop the palletised version alongside GM Defense. Its capabilities are currently being evaluated by the US Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle Systems Center.
