Goa approves rejected iron ore exports

The Goa provincial government has approved a policy to permit the export of rejected low-grade iron ore from the province. It aims to resume mining activity for four to five years after clearing the dumps, Kallanish notes.

“10 to 20 million tonnes of the low-grade iron ore were lying at different locations outside the mining leases, which can be exported as a part of the policy,” says Goa chief minister Pramod Sawant. “Goa has enough ore to sustain mining activity for the next four to five years. This ore is lying across the state at different places.”

"We collected fines to the tune of INR 200 crore ($26.88 million) in 2013-14 from people who had dumped the ore outside the mining leases. Those who have paid the fines will be allowed to move the dumps after taking permission from the Indian Bureau of Mines and paying royalty payment as per the policy," the minister adds.

The government aims to commence the e-auction of the un-paid iron ore dumps in the next 15 days. It has pegged the rates of 60% Fe, 50% Fe and below 50% Fe at INR 450/tonne, INR 350/t and INR 300/t, respectively.
