Vale has received an installation licence from local environment and sustainability authority Semas, which allows it to start building a new pig iron plan in Marabá, Pará state, Kallanish notes.
The facility will be based on Vale-owned subsidiary Tecnored’s sustainable technology for the production of low-carbon pig iron through the use of alternate energy sources, such as biomass and syngas. This method emits less CO2 than the traditional coal and coke-based process. The project also foresees the installation of a biomass development and processing laboratory.
"The plant involves millionaire investments by both Vale and the Marabá community, and the expectation is that in the installation phase it will generate around 2,000 jobs,” says the Governor of Pará, Helder Zahluth Barbalho.
The project will be located at the former Ferro Gusa Carajás facilities.
The new plant will have an annual production capacity of 500,000 tonnes of “green” pig iron.
This initiative contributes to Vale's commitment to reduce 15% of net Scope 3 emissions by 2035. Additionally, Vale is seeking to reduce its absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions each by 33% by 2030 and achieve neutrality by 2050, in line with the Paris Agreement.
