Japan’s car output increases in July

Japan's domestic car production increased in July from a year earlier, supported by a rise in new car sales.

Domestic output of passenger cars by the country's eight automakers climbed by 2pc on the year to 681,572 units in July. Japan's new car sales rose for a third consecutive month, increasing by 2.5pc from a year earlier to 212,707 units, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Production edged down by 1pc from June.

The country's car output is likely to decline because of production cuts this month and in September. Japanese car manufacturers are facing a shortage of auto components because of resurgent Covid-19 infections in southeast Asia.

Japan's biggest carmaker Toyota Motor is planning to adjust car production at its domestic operations in September following a temporary suspension of some assembly lines earlier this month.

Toyota sold around 140,000 units of new cars in Japan in July, up by 9.4pc on the year, with the shortage of auto semiconductor chips having little impact on sales. Its domestic output increased for a tenth consecutive month compared with a year earlier.
