SMS group has successfully installed and commissioned a Paul Wurth Tuyere Phenomena Detection System on blast furnace no. 14. at U.S. Steel’s works in Gary, Indiana, USA. The furnace is equipped with 34 tuyeres.
The Tuyere Phenomena Detection System monitors operating conditions at the tuyeres of a blast furnace. Tuyeres inject hot blast–and, where applicable, supplementary fuels such as natural gas–into the blast furnace.
The TPDS gives operators a clearer and safer view of tuyere conditions directly from the control room. Previously, tuyere inspections required an operator to physically check each tuyere regularly through the sight glass attached to the tuyere stock. With TPDS, this task is supported by digital visualization and monitoring, reducing the need for manual checks in the tuyere area and detecting unplanned phenomena, making furnace operations easier to control.
TPDS combines tuyere blockage detection with a raceway model. This allows the system to support operators in identifying abnormal tuyere and raceway behavior more quickly and efficiently.
The order also builds on the long-standing relationship between U.S. Steel and SMS. Over the years, several key technologies, including tapping equipment, bell-less top charging technology, pig caster, and INBA slag granulation technology have been supplied to U.S. Steel.
Brian Hynes, project manager at US Gary, states: “TPDS is for us the optimal solution as it offers a remote view of tuyere conditions and supports prediction of some phenomena thus allowing us a safer and more efficient control of our furnace.”
Pierre Van Dorpe, Product Manager at SMS group, adds: “I am truly grateful to US Steel Gary for this outstanding project. The strong teamwork throughout the project enabled us to meet the tight deadlines and successfully complete commissioning. With the TPDS installed, furnace operations are now safer and maintenance is easier to manage.”
