Rebar production among Chinese steel mills remained largely steady over the week of October 15-21, with the combined production of the 137 domestic steelmakers under Mysteel's tracking rising by just 8,400 tonnes on week to total 1.75 million tonnes, according to Mysteel's latest survey result.
But rebar output still hovers at relatively low level, with last week's output being nearly 16% below that for the same week last year, the same survey showed.
Another Mysteel weekly survey showed that rebar capacity utilization among the 137 sampled mills rose by 0.2 percentage points on week to average 38.3% over the week, while their average operational rate also gained by 0.3 percentage ponts on week to 36.7%.
Rebar stocks held by both steelmakers and traders declined during the sample week, the data show, though the decrease was tempered by contracting demand as users had mostly completed their post-holiday restocking, Mysteel Global noted.
The daily spot trading volume of steel longs including rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among 237 trading houses under Mysteel's tracking averaged 91,043 tonnes/day over October 16-22, declining by 2% or 1,897 t/d on week.
The rebar stocks held by the sampled 137 steel mills Mysteel regularly tracks totaled 1.52 million tonnes as of October 22, dropping by 3.7% or 58,400 tonnes on week. Meanwhile, the rebar inventories of Chinese traders in 144 commercial warehouses in the 35 cities Mysteel monitors had thinned by 5.2% or 204,600 tonnes on week to 3.7 million tonnes as of the same day.
Domestic rebar prices fluctuated within a narrow range this week due to the weak supply-demand balance, with Mysteel assessing the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar at Yuan 3,317/tonne ($497/t) on October 22, down by a marginal Yuan 1/t on week.
In the near term, Typhoon Champi is expected to bring torrential rain, strong winds and flooding to coastal areas in South and East China over October 23-25, which will likely disrupt work on outdoor construction projects and briefly weigh on long steel demand in those areas, Mysteel Global notes.
