Australian coal miner Yancoal Australia saw its metallurgical coal sales fall 23% quarter-on-quarter and 16% year-on-year to 1.4 million tonnes in the third quarter, Kallanish notes. The firm is targeting record 2026 production.
Nine-month metallurgical coal sales remained unchanged at 4.4mt, the firm’s bourse filing shows.
Coking coal prices are expected to remain supported by supply constraints in major exporting countries, according to the firm.
"Our operations performed in line with expectations during the quarter. Replicating the Q3 output in Q4 would match our record annual production of 2025. However, we are targeting an increase in production to deliver a new annual production record in 2026," says chief executive Sharif Burra.
Australian coking coal exports in Q3 remained largely unchanged from a year earlier, while production and export challenges in Canada, Russia and Indonesia constrained seaborne supply. Disruptions to Russian exports and operational challenges at Canadian metallurgical coal mines further limited availability, supporting market conditions during the quarter.
Meanwhile, demand conditions were mixed across major steel-producing regions. Chinese import demand strengthened; steel production remained resilient in Japan and Taiwan, while demand across Southeast Asia improved, supported by new steelmaking capacity in Vietnam.
By contrast, Indian steelmakers remained cautious during the monsoon season, drawing down inventories amid elevated coal prices. South Korean steel production continued to face pressure from weak domestic demand and increased Chinese steel exports.
