Rising global protectionism adds challenges in steel market

Global excess steel capacity is expected to rise from 601 million tons in 2025 to 745 million tons. China, which produces more than half of the world’s steel, has been identified as a major source of excess capacity. India, the world’s second-largest steel producer, is also seen as a contributor.

To address the impact of excess capacity on steel industries worldwide, trade ministers from the 28 market economies participating in the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC) issued a joint statement this year, agreeing to launch more anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and global safeguard investigations. The measures aim to impose additional tariffs and prevent existing tariffs from being bypassed.

With excess capacity continuing to grow, demand remaining weak and protectionism on the rise, the global steel market is expected to face greater challenges in the years ahead.
