Crude steel production among the 70 countries and regions surveyed by the World Steel Association (WSA) totaled 1.23 billion tonnes during January-August this year, edging down by 0.7% from the same period last year, according to the association's latest release.
During August alone, global crude steel output registered 144.2 million tonnes, dropping by 1.2% on year and by a larger 3.4% from July, Mysteel Global calculated based on WSA survey results.
Crude steel output in China, the world's largest steelmaker, slipped for the third consecutive month in August to sit at 74.6 million tonnes, this time lower by 3% on month and by a larger 3.7% on year, Mysteel Global calculated based on WSA survey results.
During last month, Chinese mills slowed operations to conduct maintenance in response to deteriorating profit margins, as Mysteel Global reported.
Meanwhile, during this year's first eight months China's steel mills produced 652 million tonnes of crude steel, sliding by 3.1% on year, the WSA reported. The total was the same as that announced earlier by China's National Bureau of Statistics, as Mysteel Global reported.
Other than China, Russia, Türkiye and Brazil among the other top ten steel-producing countries that also logged on-year drops in their cumulative crude steel production over January-August, the WSA release showed. The cumulative tonnage of these three countries dropped by 0.3%, 0.4% and 6.2% on year respectively.
India, the world's second-largest steelmaking nation, lifted crude steel output by 4.6% on year to 14.8 million tonnes in August, the WSA release indicated, which took the country's cumulative production higher by 6% to 115.9 million tonnes over January-August.
The United States saw further growth in crude steel production last month, with tonnage there rising by 3% on year to 7.3 million tonnes in August. This brought its cumulative output to 57.5 million tonnes over the past eight months, up by 5.5% on year, according to the WSA.
