Baowu & SNS explore low-carbon steel cooperation in Algeria

China’s Baowu Group and Algeria’s National Iron and Steel Company (SNS) are discussing cooperation on a planned low-carbon steel project in Algeria.

The talks took place during a visit by a Baowu delegation and focused on establishing an integrated facility for direct reduced iron and green steel production. The proposed project would combine Algeria’s natural gas resources with renewable energy and advanced decarbonization technologies.

Representatives also discussed possible joint ventures, technology transfer, and industrial solutions designed to reduce emissions from heavy industry.

Sonatrach, the Algerian state-owned oil company, was involved in discussions concerning the secure supply of natural gas, petroleum products, petrochemicals, and raw materials for the proposed projects. Both sides also examined carbon-reduction and carbon-capture technologies as part of Algeria’s broader energy transition and industrial development plans.
