Hyundai Steel is partnering with DNV (Det Norske Veritas), a global classification and certification body, to accelerate the performance verification of energy-grade steel and the expansion of its international certification framework.
On August 10, Hyundai Steel signed the “Memorandum of Understanding for the Establishment of a Certification System for Future Energy Steel and Welding Technology and Joint Technology Development” at DNV’s Korea headquarters of the classification business division in Busan. The signing ceremony was attended by Kwon Tae-woo, Executive Director and Head of the Product Development Center at Hyundai Steel; Lee Dong-seok, Head of the Applied Technology Division; and Moon Young-hwan, Head of the Technology Development Support Division at DNV Korea Maritime, among others.
The two companies agreed to jointly develop performance evaluation and verification technologies for steel materials used in the transportation and storage of future energy sources. The core work involves establishing testing and evaluation methods that account for actual vessel operation and storage environments, as well as verifying the reliability of welded joints. The broader goal is to expand the certification framework in line with international standards and secure a technological advantage in the global market.
Specific roles have also been confirmed. Hyundai Steel will deploy its in-house research infrastructure and material development capabilities to take charge of testing and analysis of steel and welded joints. DNV will leverage its expertise in international standards and certification to help establish evaluation criteria and provide technical advisory support.
This cooperation represents a preemptive response to shifts in the energy market. As the use of ammonia and hydrogen in offshore plants and the shipbuilding sector has grown in recent years, demonstrating the safety and reliability of materials has become an essential requirement. Hyundai Steel is expected to build systematic technological competitiveness spanning from product development through performance evaluation to final certification.
A Hyundai Steel official said, “Through collaboration with DNV, we will enhance the performance and reliability of steel materials required by the global energy market,” adding, “We plan to proactively build technological competitiveness in line with international standards.”
