India saw a 44.1% y/y increase in rolled steel exports in July

Imports of steel products rose by 9.5% y/y over the period

In July, India increased its rolled steel exports by 44.1% y/y – to 699,000 tonnes, according to The Hindu Business Line, citing data from the Ministry of Steel.

Steel imports into the country for the period rose by 9.5% compared with July 2025, reaching 702,000 tonnes.

Domestic steel consumption in India in July increased by 6.5% year-on-year – to 14.4 million tonnes. Steel production volumes last month stood at 14.3 million tonnes (+1.2% year-on-year).

As for steel prices, the data showed that in July they fell consistently across all major product categories. In particular, prices for hot-rolled coils fell by 0.4% compared with June, whilst prices for cold-rolled coils and galvanised sheet also declined slightly over the month. However, the cost of key steel products remained higher than a year ago.

In April–July (the first four months of the 2026/2027 financial year), India increased its exports of rolled steel by 35% year-on-year to 2.29 million tonnes, whilst imports of steel products rose by 36.6% year-on-year to 2.77 million tonnes. Domestic consumption of steel products during the period rose by 7.8% year-on-year – to 55.9 million tonnes. Steel production reached 56.3 million tonnes (+2.6% year-on-year).

The Ministry also noted that India’s seven largest steel producers together produced 31.2 million tonnes of steel between April and July, accounting for more than half of total domestic production.

It is worth recalling that the expansion of steel production capacity in India continues at a rapid pace. In the first quarter of the 2026/2027 financial year (April–June), the country’s regulatory authorities approved new projects with a combined capacity of 11.6 million tonnes of steel per year, which have received environmental clearance (EC) and construction permits (CTE).
