The UK Department for Business and Trade has announced the termination of anti-dumping duties on certain types of cold-rolled flat steel imported from China and Russia. This was reported by SteelOrbis.
The term of the relevant restrictions expired on 5 August 2026, and as a result, the official notice regarding the trade defence measures has lapsed.
The UK government has not announced an extension of the restrictions or the introduction of alternative regulatory measures; consequently, these categories of goods are no longer subject to trade defence and are now open to new imports from the countries in question. However, shipments themselves are unlikely to resume due to the new steel import quota system introduced on 1 July. As a result of its introduction, the need to extend these anti-dumping duties has ceased.
These safeguard measures were in force for five years, from 5 August 2021, following a review of the transitional period by the UK’s Trade Defence Authority. The duties imposed on Chinese exporters ranged from 19.7% to 22.1%, whilst for Russian suppliers the rate varied between 18.7% and 36.1%.
These duties were initially introduced by the European Union and, following the completion of the Brexit process, were incorporated into UK national legislation. The UK government decided to maintain the measures until August 2026, based on the TRA’s findings that lifting the duties could lead to a resumption of dumping and cause harm to the domestic steel industry.
The restrictions applied to non-alloy steel flat products in sheets, coils and strips, as well as other alloy steel flat products of various widths. These products are used in the automotive industry (for stamping body parts), the manufacture of household appliances (refrigerator and washing machine casings), construction, and the production of pipes, sections and electrical equipment.
