China Steel Corp (CSC), Taiwan's largest steel mill, has decided to cut the list prices of its major steel products by TWD 800/tonne ($9.5/t) for local sales in August. The mill, headquartered in South Taiwan's Kaohsiung, is responding to weak steel prices in the Asian market and the poor demand from local end users, according to the company's latest release published on its website.
Although prices of steelmaking raw materials stay high, global steel prices have diverged recently, with those in the United States and Europe staying firm, whereas prices in Asia have weakened. Major steel mills in Asia such as Hoa Phat Group (HPG) and Formosa Ha Tinh (FHS) have announced cuts in their latest steel list prices.
Besides, the global economy is expected to face many challenges going forward, CSC noted. The renewed turmoil in the Middle East has pushed international crude oil prices higher, for example, raising concerns about rising inflation risks in the United States.
Europe's interest rate hikes in response to inflationary pressures have raised funding costs, curbing the recovery of the manufacturing sector. Meanwhile, China's property market remains in a prolonged slump, with only a tepid recovery in sight.
In the latest World Economic Outlook of the International Monetary Fund released on July 8, global economic growth for 2026 has been lowered by 0.1 percentage point from the Fund's April prediction to 3%, as Mysteel Global reported.
As for Taiwan, CSC pointed out that the traditional manufacturing sector remains under persistent pressure, even though the overall economic performance may be buoyed by robust exports of components in the high-end technology supply chain.
Following the downtrend in Asian steel prices, local steel prices in Taiwan have also moved lower, and the weakness in end-user demand has aggravated the wait-and-see sentiment among buyers.
Consequently, to help customers secure orders, CSC has trimmed its steel list prices for August sales. The steel giant has cut its list prices for hot-rolled coil and cold-rolled coil for the second consecutive month, with a cumulative reduction totaling TWD 1,100/t for each product over the two-month period, Mysteel Global noted.
