ASEAN Iron & Steel Council urges review of induction furnace reinforcing steel bars

The ASEAN Iron & Steel Council (AISC) advises Southeast Asian governments to evaluate induction furnace (IF) technology used for reinforcing steel bars.

A technical paper by the council's Steel Product Committee reveals that this manufacturing method yields higher non-metallic impurities compared to blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF/BOF) and electric arc furnace (EAF) methods. These microscopic inclusions can compromise structural performance, ductility, and fatigue resistance.

Regional regulations often rely on older criteria focused on tensile strength and chemical composition rather than modern cleanliness tests.

Although the paper notes that recent structural failures demonstrate the necessity of updating engineering frameworks, it does not blame this technology for the 2025 Bangkok building collapse.

The council recommends scientific reviews and additional quality checks instead of an immediate ban.
