Retail stocks of the five major carbon steel items stockpiled in the commercial warehouses across China that Mysteel regularly monitors rose for the second week during June 26-July 2, mounting by 1.9%, the results of Mysteel's latest weekly survey showed.
As of July 2, the total inventories of rebar, wire rod, hot-rolled coil (HRC), cold-rolled coil (CRC) and medium plate held by traders in the 132 cities Mysteel monitors had grown by 367,300 tonnes on week to 19.21 million tonnes, the survey results showed.
Stocks of all five finished steel items posted on-week gains, with those of rebar and HRC contributing the most to the inventory accumulation by volume, the survey results indicated.
Specifically, rebar inventories had risen by 1.9% or by 145,500 tonnes on week to 7.76 million tonnes as of July 2, while stocks of HRC had mounted by 1.8% or 83,800 tonnes on week to 4.68 million tonnes as of the same day.
Despite a modest uptick in end-user demand fromrestocking activity, the rapid influx of cargoes into commercial warehouses pushed the weekly inventory growth rate up by 0.1 percentage point from 1.8% last week, Mysteel Global noted.
The combined daily trading volume of construction steel comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses nationwide under Mysteel's tracking increased by 7% or 6,094 tonnes/day on week over June 25-July 1 but still hovered low at an average of 92,962 t/d.
During the same sample week, inventories of the five major carbon steel products held by the 137 Chinese steelmakers regularly sampled by Mysteel declined marginally, with the tonnage edging down by 0.5% or 24,600 tonnes on week to 4.54 million tonnes and ending a four-week climb.
China's finished steel prices lost more ground over the week amid subdued spot transactions. Mysteelassessed the national price of HRB400E 20mm diarebar at Yuan 3,291/tonne ($485/t) including the 13% VAT on July 1, slipping by Yuan 32/t on week, while the average price of Q235 4.75mm HRC nationwide dropped by Yuan 30/t from one week prior to Yuan 3,328/t including the 13% VAT on the same day.
Meanwhile, finished steel inventories held by traders in Mysteel's smaller sample of 35 cities also extended their on-week gain this week. The same survey showed that as of July 2, the tonnage sat at 11.69 million tonnes, climbing by 2.1% or by 245,200 tonnes from June 25.
