Members' crude steel output drops 5% YoY in Q1

Crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) totaled 202 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, slipping by 5.1% on year, according to the association's latest release published on April 20.

For March alone, the member mills produced 70.3 million tonnes of crude steel, declining by the same 5.1% on year, the CISA survey revealed. But the tonnage was 10.6% higher on month compared with the February output, reflecting the resumption of production after the Chinese New Year (CNY) holiday from February 15-23, Mysteel Global calculated based on the CISA release.

Nationally, crude steel output among all domestic steelmakers dropped by 4.6% on year over January-March to sit at 248 million tonnes, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicated.

In parallel, finished steel output among CISA members amounted to 200 million tonnes over the first three months of this year, lower by 3.7% on year. The members' output accounted for 57% of China's total finished steel output of 351 million tonnes over the same period, Mysteel Global calculated based on the NBS data.

Nationwide finished steel output in the first three months logged a 1.7% decline compared with the same quarter last year at 359 million tonnes, the NBS statistics showed.
