Rebar output among the 137 Chinese steel mills Mysteel regularly tracks pulled back slightly during the week of April 9-15, with the production volume retreating by 1.1% or 24,500 tonnes on week to 2.13 million tonnes, according to Mysteel's latest survey results.
Some rebar steelmakers slowed operations on their rebar rolling mills this week, resulting in the small dip in output, the results show.
The rebar rolling capacity utilization rate among those mills dropped by 0.5 percentage points on week to average 46.7% over the same period, the data show, with steelmakers in North China's Shanxi and Southeast China's Jiangxi provinces contributing the most to the production decline.
Yet demand improved as construction companies seized upon warmer weather to speed up work on projects, which in turn strengthened demand for long steel items including rebar this week. The volume of longs including rebar traded among the 237 trading houses under Mysteel's tracking averaged 113,867 tonnes/day over April 10-16, soaring by 17% or 16,517 t/d on week.
Better sentiment in the rebar market and recovering demand among end-users gave a lift to rebar prices too this week, Mysteel Global noted.
In the domestic derivatives market, the price of the most-traded rebar futures contract for October delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange closed the daytime trading session at Yuan 3,133/tonne ($459/t) on April 16, rising by 0.87% on week from the settlement price on April 9, according to the exchange's data.
In parallel, Mysteel assessed the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar at Yuan 3,342/t on April 16, gaining by Yuan 19/t on week from the level on April 9.
In addition, lower output and higher demand have resulted in steady inventory drawdown, with the tonnage of rebar stocks stored in commercial warehouses in the 35 Chinese cities Mysteel monitors dropping by some 3% or 183,200 tonnes on week to sit at 6.01 million tonnes as of April 16.
