Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) averaged 2.1 million tonnes/day during April 1-10, recovering by 5.6% or 112,000 t/d from the previous eleven-day period, according to the latest release from the association on April 15.
Despite the rise, the average was still lower by 4.2% compared to the same ten days last year, CISA indicated in the release.
Based on the performance of its member mills, the association estimated that daily crude steel output among both member mills and non-member mills averaged 2.73 million t/d during the period, higher by the same 5.6% from late-March, the CISA report showed.
By volume, member steelmakers in North China, the hub of China's steel sector, contributed the most to the production gain among the six regions that the association regularly checks. Member mills in this region produced an average of 719,000 t/d over April 1-10, climbing significantly by 7.4% or 49,000 t/d from the last eleven days of March, the CISA survey findings indicated.
On the other hand, daily finished steel output among CISA member mills averaged 1.95 million t/d over the early-April period, declining by 5.1% or 104,000 t/d from March 21-31, the same release showed.
The association attributed the moderate decrease in end-March to the high basis for comparison caused by the bulk warehousing of finished steel undertaken by several member mills, as Mysteel Global reported.
But even excluding that factor, daily finished steel output was still lower by 4% from the late-March period, the association statistics show.
Despite the lower output, finished steel stocks held by the CISA member mills totaled 17.51 million tonnes as of April 10, mounting by 5.9% or 960,000 tonnes from March 31, another release issued on the same day indicated.
Recovering end-user demand over early-April led the finished steel inventories held by traders in 21 Chinese cities CISA tracks to thin, with the tonnage falling by 5.3% or 600,000 tonnes from March 31 to sit at 10.82 million tonnes as of April 10, another CISA release showed.
