Shagang Group (Shagang), China's leading privately-owned steel company and its largest electric-arc-furnace steelmaker, has successfully rolled its first coil of ultra-thin high-grade non-grain-oriented (NGO) electrical steel, marking the East China company’s entry into the leading tier of domestic producers in this niche segment, the steelmaker noted in a statement on March 17.
Silicon steel is a core material used in new energy vehicle (NEV) drive motors, ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transformers, and high-end home appliances, Shagang noted, adding that conventional NEV drive motors typically use NGO electrical steel with a thickness of 0.20-0.35mm but it's new offering – dubbed 'SG10WV950 ' – is rolling down to only 0.10mm, which is thinner than a sheet of A4 printer paper.
Shagang explained that as NEV motor speeds increase, core losses rise sharply, resulting in significant heat generation and reduced efficiency. "By switching to ultra-thin 0.10mm material, core losses under high-speed operating conditions can be reduced by 30% to 50%, substantially lowering internal energy losses and improving overall motor efficiency," the release said.
The ability to roll 0.10mm high-grade NGO electrical steel is a first for Shagang but not for China, Mysteel Global notes, Wuhan Iron and Steel Group having announced it had begun mass-producing 0.10mm high-grade NGO electrical steel in May 2024.
