Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) averaged some 1.98 million tonnes/day during January 11-20, slipping by a minimal 0.9% or by 18,000 t/d from last eleven days of 2025, according to the latest release from the association on January 23.
Following the small decline, the average for the period had decreased by a larger 4.5% from the 3.3% decline in the corresponding period last year, the data in the same release showed.
Based on the crude steel output among its member mills, CISA estimated that China's crude steel output over mid-January among member and non-member mills nationwide totalled 2.44 million t/d on average, down by 1.7% from the previous ten-day period.
By volume, member mills in North China, the hub of China's steel sector, contributed the most to the production decline among the six regions that the association checks. Member mills in the region produced an average of 659,000 t/d over January 11-20, retreating by 2.2% or 15,000 t/d from early-January, the CISA survey result showed.
Elsewhere, member mills in East, Northeast and Northwest China also witnessed lower daily crude steel production over the same period, while those in Southwest and Central South China logged mild gains in crude steel output, according to the CISA release.
On the other hand, daily finished steel output among the member mills averaged 1.88 million t/d over January 11-20, recovering mildly by 3% or 55,000 t/d from the first ten days of January, the same release pointed out.
Finished steel stocks held by the CISA member mills mounted further and faster in the ten-day period, reflecting the higher output. The stocks totalled 16.13 million tonnes as of January 20, recording a significant gain by 7.3% or 1.09 million tonnes from ten days prior. Finished steel inventories had mounted by 6.4% or 900,000 tonnes from December 31 to reach 15.04 million tonnes as of January 10, as Mysteel Global reported.
Meanwhile, the finished steel stocks held by traders in commercial warehouses in the 21 cities CISA regularly checks came in at 7.09 million tonnes as of January 20, inching down by 0.3% or 20,000 tonnes from the previous ten-day period, data in another CISA release published Thursday showed.
