Australia has initiated a safeguard investigation into fabricated structural steel (FSS), according to its notification to the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
The products fall within the tariff subheadings of 7308.10 and 7308.90 of the Australian Customs Tariff, Kallanish learns.
The investigation was initiated pursuant to an application from Australian companies.
The evidence submitted by the applicants indicates the FSS imports under investigation increased 38.7% from 2020 to 539,649 tonnes in 2024.
The ratio of imports to domestic supply also rose from 15% in the fiscal year through 30 June 2021 to 26% in fiscal year 2022-23. Meanwhile, import unit prices have consistently been lower than 50-70% of the global average price.
New Zealand and Singapore are excluded from safeguard action under the Australia-New Zealand Closer Economic Relations Trade Agreement and the Singapore-Australia Free Trade Agreement.
A final report is expected to be provided to the Treasurer of Australia within ten months of initiation/referral.
