Tokyo Steel holds prices for second consecutive month

Tokyo Steel, Japan's leading electric arc furnace steelmaker, will hold prices for all products stable for the second month in a row in February despite increased costs, Kallanish notes.

February's base prices for H-beam, rebar, hot rolled coil and plate remain at JPY 103,000/tonne ($652/t), JPY 82,000/t, JPY 91,000/t and JPY 97,000/t, respectively. The dollar price of H-beams has decreased by around $11/t m-o-m even though the Japanese yen price remained unchanged, indicating that the yen has continued to depreciate against the dollar.

The price strategy of the company is the same as that adopted by China’s Baosteel for February. Angang Group also maintained all prices unchanged in February except for wire rod and non-oriented silicon steel, which each saw a price increase of CNY 50/t ($7/t) compared to the previous month.

Tokyo Steel says steelmakers are receiving orders for large quantities of steel with short delivery times, although domestic construction steel demand remains slow. For imported flat products, it states that prices are showing a slight upward trend due to rising costs and exchange rate fluctuation.
