Indonesia to adjust 2026 nickel quotas

Indonesia plans to calibrate its nickel production quotas in 2026 to align with industry requirements and support global price levels, according to media reports.

Kallanish notes from a Reuters report that Energy and Mineral Resources Minister, Bahlil Lahadalia, confirms the government is prepared to implement strategic quota adjustments for its mining sector. While a specific production figure for 2026 was not disclosed, the minister emphasised that the output plan (RKAB) would be tailored to meet the specific demands of domestic smelters.

Bahlil notes that quota management is specifically intended to support the valuation of Indonesian mining products. "We are currently calculating how much capacity the industry has and we will have to be able to supply them," he says.

Despite the government's silence on official 2025 production totals, the Indonesian Nickel Smelter Association (FINI) estimates that domestic demand for nickel ore will climb to between 340 million and 350 mt in 2026, up from approximately 300mt in 2025.
