Indonesian rerollers are turning to Vietnamese slab amid a sluggish Vietnamese hot rolled coil market, Kallanish notes.
Vietnamese mills are cutting output of HRC for February shipments and boosting slab exports instead, Vietnamese trading sources say.
A leading re-roller in Indonesia recently booked 30,000 tonnes of Vietnamese re-rolling slab for March shipment at $457/tonne cfr. The deal was done around 23 December, Indonesian trading sources say.
Another Indonesian reroller was also in discussions “to get some allocations” from the same Vietnamese slab producer, a Jakarta trader noted during the week through 26 December.
It had previously ordered 130,000t of February 2026-shipment slab from another Vietnamese mill at $435/t cfr during the first half of December.
A Vietnamese trader deems the earlier-December transaction price as low because tradeable levels for Vietnamese slab were then at $435-440/t fob. Tradeable levels for Vietnamese slab have since moved up to $445-450/t fob, he adds.
