Feng Hsin Steel, Taiwan's largest rebar producer headquartered in Taichung in central Taiwan, has decided to roll over its rebar list prices and local scrap procurement prices again for transactions over December 29-January 2 to monitor market changes, according to a company official. This marks the fifth consecutive week that the mini-mill has maintained these prices since a price hike in mid-November, Mysteel Global notes.
For business discussions valid until this Friday, Feng Hsin's list price of 13mm-diameter rebar stays at TWD 16,400/tonne ($523/t) EXW, the same level as the previous week, and its buying price for local HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap also remains unchanged on week at TWD 8,200/t, the official confirmed.
Prices of global scrap delivered to Taiwan have been stable recently, encouraging local mini-mills on the island to maintain their rebar list prices and buying prices of local scrap, adopting a wait-and-see approach, Mysteel Global learned.
As of December 29, the price of US-sourced HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap was reported at $300/t CFR Taiwan, being unchanged since late September, while the price for Japanese H2 scrap hovered at $315/t CFR Taiwan, the same level as mid-October, according to a local market source.
With the slowdown in the property sector, rebar demand from Taiwan's end-users remains depressed, although the fourth quarter is typically a peak season for rebar consumption on the island due to expectations that the construction of certain projects will accelerate ahead of the Chinese New Year, the company official told Mysteel Global.
Rebar prices in the Chinese mainland kept rangebound with thinning demand, which aggravated the cautious sentiment prevailing in Taiwan's steel market, Mysteel Global noted.
As of December 29, China's national price of HRB400E 20mm rebar – an indicator of domestic steel-market sentiment – was assessed by Mysteel at Yuan 3,325/tonne ($475/t) including 13% VAT, dipping by Yuan 3/t from one week before.
Over December 23-29, the combined daily trading volume of construction steel comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses nationwide under Mysteel's tracking averaged 96,653 tonnes/day, slipping by 4,229 t/d from the prior week.
