WEEKLY: China's rebar output rises further on better profit margins

Rebar output among the 137 Chinese steel mills that Mysteel monitors regularly climbed further during December 18-24, rising by 1.5% or 27,100 tonnes on week to 1.84 million tonnes, according to Mysteel's weekly survey.

During the same survey week, the rebar rolling capacity utilization rate among the sampled mills edged up by 0.6 percentage points on week to average 40.4%, the findings of another Mysteel survey showed.

Some steel mills lifted their rates of steel production overall, while others opted to allocate more hot metal to making rebars where they believed the profit margins were better, leading to the rebar production gain. By province, steel mills in Central China's Hunan and Southwest China's Sichuan provinces contributed the most to the rebar output rise, Mysteel's survey results showed.

Easing prices of steelmaking raw materials led to higher profit margins from rebar sales during the week, Mysteel Global noted. For example, independent suppliers of metallurgical coke conceded some of their sales profits to their steelmaker customers on December 22, reducing prices by Yuan 50-55/tonne ($7.1-7.7/t), as Mysteel Global reported.

Mysteel assessed the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar at Yuan 3,326/t on December 25, up by a minimal Yuan 2/t from the level on December 18.

The small rise in rebar output this week contributed to a similarly small increase in rebar stocks held by the surveyed steel mills amid the weak end-user demand, Mysteel Global noted.

The ten-week drop in rebar stocks stored at the 137 steel mills under Mysteel's coverage finally ended during the survey week, nudging up by 0.4% or 5,200 tonnes on week to 1.4 million tonnes over December 19-25.

Daily spot trading volume of construction steel items including rebar among the 237 trading houses Mysteel regularly checks averaged 94,170 tonnes/day over December 19-25, dropping by 4.4% or 4,336 t/d from one week prior.
