Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) retreated slightly during December 11-20, lower by 1.3% or 24,000 tonnes/day from early-December to average 1.85 million t/d, according to the latest release from the association on December 24.
Moreover, the average also posted a 6.7% decline compared to the same ten-day period last December, but the drop narrowed from the 7.7% on-year slide recorded in the first ten days of this month, according to the same release.
Among the six regions that the association monitors, member mills in Central South China contributed the most to the production loss, with their combined daily crude steel output slumping by 11.4% from the prior ten days to average 263,000 t/d in mid-December. Notably, the daily output of member mills in Central China's Hubei province plunged by 62.2%.
Elsewhere, member mills in Northwest and Southwest China also witnessed their daily crude steel production trending slightly lower over the same period, while those in Northeast, North and East China recorded mild gains in their daily crude steel output, according to the CISA release.
Based on the same dataset, the CISA estimated that China's daily crude steel output nationwide totaled 2.27 million t/d on average over December 11-20, edging down by a small 0.4% from the previous ten-day period.
Meanwhile, finished steel produced by CISA member mills averaged 1.8 million t/d over December 11-20, down by 1.4% or 26,000 t/d from the first ten days in December, statistics in the same release showed.
Despite the lower output, finished steel inventories held by these member mills climbed higher in mid-December, up by a marked 8.6% or 1.26 million tonnes from December 10 to hit 16.01 million tonnes as of December 20, indicated another release of the association also published on Wednesday.
