Shagang Group (Shagang), China's leading privately-owned steelmaker, has decided to roll over its list prices for long products for sales during December 21-31 from its previous ten-day sales period, the company announced Sunday.
With its latest pricing policy, Shagang continues to hold the price of its HRB400 16-20mm rebar at Yuan 3,450/tonne ($490/t), its HPB300 6-10mm wire rod at Yuan 3,470/t, and its HRB400 8-10mm bar-in-coil at Yuan 3,560/t. All prices are EXW and include the 13% VAT.
Shagang, headquartered in Zhangjiagang in East China's Jiangsu province, updates its long steel prices three times a month and is generally regarded as the price-setter for the domestic long steel market, particularly in East China, Mysteel Global noted.
Its latest price decision marks the tenth consecutive pricing cycle in which Shagang has opted to roll over the prices of its longs. Market sources say that the decision reflected Shagang's cautious stance towards the near-term steel market as long product fundamentals are showing tentative signs of recovery.
Despite a small uptick, long steel output still hovered at relatively low levels last week while retail stocks continued to fell markedly, Mysteel's weekly survey results indicated.
Over December 11-17, the combined output of rebar and wire rod among the 137 Chinese steel mills under Mysteel's tracking risen by a minimal 0.9% or 23,300 tonnes on week to 2.57 million tonnes, the data show.
Despite the increase, the combined inventory of rebar and wire rod in commercial warehouses in the 35 cities under Mysteel's coverage had slid significantly by 7.8% or 303,900 tonnes on week to 3.6 million tonnes over December 12-18.
Buoyed by the better market sentiment and improving fundamentals, China's construction steel prices recorded modest gains in mid-December. For instance, as of December 19, the spot price of HRB400E 20mm rebar in Shanghai – a major market for Shagang brand rebar – had mounted by Yuan 20/t from the price on December 10 to reach Yuan 3,300/t including the 13% VAT, Mysteel's assessment showed.
