Hoa Phat breaks ground on steel rail plant

Vietnam's Hoa Phat Group broke ground on its rail and special steel manufacturing plant at the eastern industrial zone of the Dung Quat Economic Zone on 19 December, according to the steelmaker's press release.

The project carries a designed capacity of 700,000 tonnes/year, with total investment exceeding VND 10 trillion ($380 million), Kallanish notes.

So far, the plant's site clearance and legal approvals have been completed, with construction now under way. Equipment installation is expected to begin in mid-2026, targeting commissioning in 2027.

Products will include high-speed railway rails, urban rail rails, crane rails, and structural sections such as U, I, H and V beams, alongside other special steels.

The steelmaker expects to roll rail lengths of up to 100 metres, with tight flatness and straightness tolerances, using low-impurity iron ore as feedstock.

Finished rails will comply with EN 3674, JIS E1120 and TB/T2344 standards.

Vietnam's provincial authorities said the project aligns with the country’s industrial development strategy, helping to reduce reliance on imported railway materials by supplying high-speed railway rails and special steel products for its key rail infrastructure projects.
