Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) averaged 1.87 million tonnes/day during December 1-10, rebounding by 2.8% or 51,000 t/d from the last ten days of November, according to the latest release from the association on December 15.
On a yearly basis, the average remained 7.7% lower than the level seen in the same ten-day period last December, but the decline narrowed clearly from the 13.1% on-year slip recorded in late November, according to the release.
Based on the crude steel output among the member mills, CISA estimated that China's crude steel output over December 1-10 among member and non-member mills nationwide totalled 2.28 million t/d on average, rising by a larger 5.3% from the previous ten-day period.
By volume, member mills in North China, the hub of China's steel sector, contributed the most to the production gain among the six regions that the association checks. Member mills in the region produced an average of 633,000 t/d in early December, jumping by 9.7% or 56,000 t/d from late November.
Elsewhere, member mills in East and Northwest China also saw higher daily crude steel production over the same period, while those in Northeast, Southwest and Central South China logged mild losses in crude steel output, according to the CISA release.
On the other hand, daily finished steel output among the member mills averaged 1.83 million t/d over December 1-10, down by a substantial 12.1% or 251,000 t/d from the last ten days of November, the same release pointed out.
The bulk receipt by the end of November set a high basis for comparison, which was partly responsible for the marked drop in finished steel output in early December, the association noted in the release. After adjusting for the influence of this factor, the finished steel output during December 1-10 declined by 10.7% from November 21-30.
Despite the lower output, the finished steel stocks held by CISA member mills still mounted by 3.3% or 470,000 tonnes from November 30 to 14.75 million tonnes as of December 10, revealed another CISA release also published on Monday.
