China's crude steel output came in at 69.87 million tonnes in November, posting a sharp fall of 10.9% on year, according to the latest release by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Monday morning.
Last month, the country's daily crude steel output averaged 2.33 million tonnes/day, hovering slightly higher than the 2.32-million-tonne average for October, Mysteel Global calculated based on the NBS data.
Chinese steelmakers kept their run rates at a relatively low level in November, mainly because of lackluster demand from end-users during the traditional off-season for steel consumption in winter and their worsened profitability on finished steel sales, Mysteel Global noted.
The combined daily trading volume of construction steel comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses under Mysteel's tracking nationwide registered 100,373 t/d on average in November, down by 909 t/d from October.
By the end of November, only about 35% of the 247 sampled blast-furnace (BF) steel mills in China under Mysteel's regular tracking reported making a profit on their steel sales, a decrease of approximately 10 percentage points on month.
China's finished steel prices showed mixed trends last month, with the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar under Mysteel's assessment standing at Yuan 3,291/tonne ($467/t) including the 13% VAT as of November 28, rising by Yuan 31/t from the end of October, while the assessed price of Q235 4.75mm HRC came in at Yuan 3,318/t including the 13% VAT with an on-month fall of Yuan 47/t.
Over January-November, China produced a total of 891.7 million tonnes of crude steel, lower by 4% compared with the same period last year, the NBS statistics showed.
China's finished steel output also recorded an on-year fall of 2.6% to sit at 115.9 million tonnes in November, taking the total production for the first 11 months of this year to 1.33 billion tonnes, which was still 4% higher than the same period of 2024, according to the NBS statistics.
