Chinese investors start Kazakhstan steelworks construction, eye exports

Asia United Steel has begun the construction of its rolling mill in the Kazybek Bek industrial zone of the Almaty region, Kazakhstan, according to the Almaty regional authorities. The KZT 289 billion ($560.2 million) project has been financed by Chinese investors.

The plant will begin operations in 2027 and will produce up to 1.2 million tonnes/year of steel, Kallanish notes. Once it reaches design capacity, Asia United Steel is expected to become a major exporter of rolled steel products to Asian countries.

The plant will be equipped with energy-efficient electric arc furnaces. Due to its location in a special zone, the industrial site will be provided with the necessary engineering infrastructure and access railway lines with a traffic flow of up to 100 wagons per day.

“The future plant could become one of the largest metallurgical enterprises in southern Kazakhstan,” says Marat Sultangaziyev, head of the Almaty Region. “It’s commissioning will boost not only the region's potential but also the economic strength of the entire country.”

According to Asia United Steel founder Lin Guo-Shong, the Almaty region is one of the most promising for cooperation and business in Kazakhstan. “This project is entirely financed by foreign investment. The plant will produce construction and industrial steel products in demand both domestically and internationally. The main goal is to supply the countries of Central Asia with these products,” he adds.

Kazakhstan increased crude steel production in October compared to the previous month to 350,515 tonnes, up by 22.7% month-on-month and 3.7% more year-on-year (see Kallanish passim). January-October steel production was however down by 0.1% on-year to 3.43 million tonnes.
