Members' daily crude steel output pulls back in late-Nov

Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) averaged 1.82 million tonnes/day during November 21-30, dropping significantly by 6.4% or by 125,000 t/d from previous ten-day period, according to the latest release from the association on December 5.

Moreover, the average marked a double-digit on-year decline of 13.1% from the same ten-day period last year, according to the release.

Based on the members' crude steel output, CISA estimated that China's crude steel output over late-November among all steel mills nationwide totaled 2.16 million t/d on average, dropping by 6.4% from the previous ten-day period.

Member mills in North China, the hub of China's steel sector, contributed the most to the production slide among the six regions that the association monitors by volume. The North China makers produced an average of 577,000 t/d in late-November, lower by 9.2% or 59,000 t/d from November 11-20 and accounting for 47.2% of the total loss of 125,000 t/d nationwide, according to the CISA report.

Meanwhile, daily finished steel output among the member mills averaged 2.08 million t/d over the last ten days of November, up by a significant 8.1% or 160,000 t/d from the previous ten-day period, the same release revealed.

The broad gain was partly attributed to the bulk receipt of finished steel in the survey period, the association noted in the release. After adjusting for the influence of this factor, the growth rate was calculated at 6.4% from mid-November.

Despite the substantial rise in finished steel output, downstream demand also posted broad gains over November 21-30 amid upbeat market sentiment, the data show. This outpaced the growth in production, driving down finished steel inventories held by CISA member mills in the period.

Consequently, as of November 30 finished steel stocks held by CISA member mills totalled 14.28 million tonnes, lower by 8.5% or 1.33 million tonnes from November 20, according to another CISA release also published on Friday.
