Chinese mills' steel stocks slip further

Inventories of the five major carbon steel products held by the Chinese steel mills sampled in Mysteel's regular survey declined again over November 28-December 4 to reach 3.87 million tonnes, falling for the eighth consecutive week by 1.6% on week.

The five major steel items comprise rebar, wire rod, hot-rolled coil (HRC), cold-rolled coil (CRC) and medium plate. Inventories of most major steel items decreased by varying degrees during the survey period, except for an on-week rise of 2.4% in HRC stocks, the findings showed.

The continuous fall in mills' total steel inventories was mainly attributed to the decline in their finished steel output. Some steel mills slowed production this week given that demand from end-users in northern China shrank further with the arrival of colder winter weather, Mysteel Global noted.

Over November 27-December 3, total production of the five major steel products among the sampled steel mills reached 8.29 million tonnes, sliding by 3.1% from the prior week.

Overall market sentiment remained positive this week, keeping domestic finished steel prices firm. On December 3, the national average price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar was assessed by Mysteel at Yuan 3,329/tonne ($471/t) including the 13% VAT, edging up by Yuan 37/t from one week earlier. On December 3, Mysteel assessed the national average price of Q235 4.75mm HRC at Yuan 3,332/t including the 13% VAT, higher by Yuan 8/t on week.

Steel sales in the physical market improved slightly thanks to the replenishments of some end-users. Mysteel's other survey showed that over November 27-December 3, the daily trading volume of construction steel comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses nationwide monitored by Mysteel averaged 102,025 tonnes/day, rising by a tiny 994 t/d on week.

Inventories of the five major steel products at warehouses in the 132 Chinese cities under Mysteel's regular tracking continued to decline during November 28-December 4, with the total tonnage down for the seventh straight week by 2.4% on week at 15.96 million tonnes, according to the survey.
