Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) averaged 1.94 million tonnes/day during November 11-20, nudging up by a small 0.9% or by 17,000 t/d from November 1-10, according to the latest release from the association on November 25.
Despite the marginal gain, the average still logged an on-year decline of 6.6% from the same ten-day period last year, according to the release.
CISA estimated that China's crude steel output over November 11-20 among both member and non-member mills totalled 2.31 million t/d on average, dropping by 1.8% from the previous ten-day period.
As a result, the CISA members' crude steel output in mid-November accounted for 84% of China's total, rising by 2 percentage points compared with the members' share in the first ten days of this month, Mysteel Global calculated based on the release.
North China, the hub of China's steel sector, contributed the most to the production gain among the six regions that the association monitors. Member mills in the region produced an average of 636,000 t/d of crude steel in mid-November, climbing by 1.3% or 8,000 t/d from early-November and accounting for 47% of the total 17,000 t/d increase.
Meanwhile, the member mills produced 1.92 million tonnes t/d of finished steel on average over November 11-20, higher by 2.1% or 40,000 t/d from early-November, according to the same release.
Although end-user steel demand also picked up a little during November 11-20, it failed to outpace the production growth over the same period, causing the inventories of finished steel held by CISA member mills to mount further.
As a result, finished steel stocks held by CISA member mills totalled 15.61 million tonnes as of November 20, up by 0.8% or 120,000 tonnes from November 10, according to another CISA release also published on Tuesday.
