JSW commissions green hydrogen plant in India

JSW Energy, the energy arm of Indian conglomerate JSW Group, has commissioned what it says is the country’s largest green hydrogen plant at Vijayanagar in the Karnataka state.

The project will initially supply 3,800 tonnes/year of green hydrogen to JSW Steel’s adjacent direct reduced iron (DRI) plant to produce low-carbon steel through a seven-year offtake agreement. Kallanish understands the two companies have also inked an MOU to progressively supply 85,000-90,000 t/y of green hydrogen and 720,000 t/y of green oxygen to the steelmaker by the end of the decade.

“The project is a key milestone in our country’s clean energy journey and reflects our unwavering commitment to support India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy and decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors such as steel,” comments JSW Energy joint managing director and ceo Sharad Mahendra.

“Green hydrogen will assume a pivotal role in shaping a sustainable and Atmanirbhar Bharat [self-reliant India].”

JSW Energy was allocated green hydrogen production capacity of 6,800 t/y under India’s first auction for green hydrogen subsidies. The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) scheme offered subsidies of up to INR 50/km ($0.60/km) of H2 in the first year, INR 40 in the second, and INR 30 in the third.

The South Asian country aims to produce 5 million t/y of green hydrogen by 2030. To promote green hydrogen’s use in the steel sector, the government last year launched an INR 4.55 billion auction for DRI pilot plants that use hydrogen.
