Italian rebar mills increase prices on low availability

Italian rebar producers are raising prices. According to two informed sources, a fire occurred earlier this month at Ferriere Nord, part of the Pittini Group, in Osoppo, northern Italy. The incident is expected to disrupt production and limit supply until the end of November, with around 450 workers placed on temporary layoff.

So far this month transaction prices are largely unchanged compared with the end of October. Buyers are still receiving material bought at €250-260/tonne ($290.39-302/t) base ex-works, and some say they are not in urgent need of material. For new contracts, steelmakers are now pushing for €330/t base ex-works. Some however are ready to accept €300/t base ex-works but only if orders are implemented this week.

Including size extras of €260-270/t, effective transaction prices currently stand at €510-530/t ex-works. The buyers who spoke to Kallanish are not willing to grant such strong increases. Two contend that the hikes, if accepted temporarily, are not sustainable in the current slow market. Several steelmaking, distribution and construction company sources agree that demand is currently very weak. In the South, however, steelmakers continue to sell solid volumes thanks to several infrastructure projects currently underway and supported by the post-Covid European recovery fund.

Producers are seeking to lift mesh base prices to €430/t for new contracts. Before the increases mesh contracts hovered at around €360/t base ex-works, excluding an additional €300/t in size extras.
