South Korean battery manufacturer Samsung SDI announced Friday that it will supply all-solid-state battery (ASSB) cells to German carmaker BMW Group under a validation project, Kallanish learns.
The agreement is part of a trilateral arrangement that includes the US battery technology company Solid Power, which will provide Samsung SDI with its solid electrolyte. The aim is to form global value chains for ASSBs covering materials, cells and vehicles.
Although specific details on timeline and volumes are yet to be disclosed, Samsung SDI says BMW will develop modules and packs to evaluate the performance of the cells in its next-generation EVs. The battery maker is in talks with potential customers, intensifying efforts to commercialise ASSB cells.
“Technological competitiveness in batteries would ultimately lead to innovation in electric vehicles,” notes Stella Joo-Young Go, executive vice president of ASSB commercialisation team at Samsung SDI.
For Martin Schuster, vice president battery cell and cell module at the BMW Group, this global collaboration “is another proof point of our overarching goal: to be always in a position to offer our customers state-of-the-art battery technology.”
When fully commercialised, ASSBs are expected to offer higher energy density, faster charging, longer lifespan and improved safety than existing lithium-ion batteries, which are based on a liquid electrolyte.
