Taiwan's Feng Hsin Steel cuts rebar list price by $7/t

Feng Hsin Steel, Taiwan's largest rebar producer, has decided to cut its rebar list price by TWD 200/tonne ($6.5/t) for transactions over October 27-31, while it has chosen to keep its buying price for local scrap unchanged to monitor market changes in the near future, according to a company official.

With the latest adjustment, the Taiwanese mini-mill is offering its 13mm dia rebar at TWD 16,200/t EXW for business discussions till this Friday, while its buying price of local HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap stays flat on week at TWD 7,800/t, the official confirmed.

Prices of global steel scrap delivered to Taiwan have remained stable overall lately, encouraging mini-mills on the island to hold their procurement prices of local scrap to wait and see, Mysteel Global noted.

As of October 27, the price of US-sourced HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap was reported at $300/t CFR Taiwan, the same level since late September. There was no quotation for Japan-origin H2 scrap over the past week, a local market source in Taiwan said.

On the other hand, Feng Hsin cut its rebar list price mainly to facilitate sales this week after noting the depressed demand from end-users, though the fourth quarter is considered the traditional peak season for steel consumption in Taiwan.

Conversely, rebar prices in the Chinese mainland showed signs of strengthening at the start of this week due to improved market sentiment, driven by production curbs in northern China to improve air quality and a "preliminary consensus" reached between US and Chinese negotiators on key trade issues last Saturday.

As of October 27, China's national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar under Mysteel's assessment came in at Yuan 3,234/tonne ($455/t) including the 13% VAT, rising by Yuan 17/t from one week before.
