Daily crude steel output among the member mills of the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) edged down to average 2.01 million tonnes/day during October 11-20, down by a small 0.9% or 18,000 t/d from the previous ten-day period, according to the latest release from the association on October 24.
Similarly, the average declined by a larger 2.8% compared with the corresponding period last year as well.
Based on the same dataset, CISA estimated that China's nationwide crude steel output over October 11-20 averaged 2.46 million t/d, retreating by 2% from early-October.
The CISA provides no commentary to go with its data, but one of the possible reasons for the production dip was the mandated production restriction in Tangshan city in North China's Hebei province from September 29-October 20 as part of government efforts to reduce atmospheric pollution, as Mysteel reported.
During October 11-20, daily crude steel output among the CISA member mills in Hebei province fell by 2.1% or 10,000 t/d from the October 1-10 period, accounting for about 55% of the nationwide drop of 18,000 t/d, Mysteel Global calculated based on the CISA release.
Lackluster steel demand and largely steady output resulted in the accumulation of finished steel stocks among CISA member mills, Mysteel Global noted.
Accordingly, finished steel stocks held by CISA member mills totaled 16.58 million tonnes as of October 20, up by 4.4% or 700,000 tonnes from ten days earlier, according to another CISA release published last Friday.
Mounting inventory pressure has also drive down finished steel prices. For instance, on October 20 Mysteel assessed the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar at Yuan 3,217/tonne ($452/t) including the 13% VAT, down by Yuan 46/t from the level on October 10.
