China's rebar output rebounds by 3% WoW

After dropping for the previous two weeks, China's rebar output rose during October 16-22, with the combined tonnage produced by the 137 Chinese steel mills under Mysteel's tracking reaching 2.07 million tonnes, up by 2.9% or 59,100 tonnes on week, according to Mysteel's latest weekly survey.

Another Mysteel survey showed the rebar rolling capacity utilization rate among the mills rising 1.3 percentage points on week to 45.4 and the operational rate climbing by 1.6 percentage points on week to 43%.

Steelmakers in East China's Jiangsu, Northeast China's Heilongjiang and South China's Guangdong provinces contributed the most to the production rebound, according to Mysteel's weekly report, resumed operations on their steelmaking facilities or adjusted rolling plans to make more rebars during the week.

In the derivatives market, the most-traded rebar futures contract for next January delivery on the Shanghai Futures Exchange closed the daytime trading session on October 23 at Yuan 3,071/tonne ($431/t), up by Yuan 35/t on week compared to the settlement price on October 16.

During October 17-23, the daily spot trading volume of long steel items including rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses under Mysteel's tracking averaged 101,357 tonnes/day, up by 4.2% or 4,095 t/d on week.

Despite the rise in rebar production, rebar stocks held by traders declined on-week, mainly thanks to the broader demand increase in the physical market, Mysteel Global noted.

The upbeat market sentiment also drove up spot rebar prices to some extent. Mysteel assessed the national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar at Yuan 3,225/t on October 23, up by a mild Yuan 13/t on week compared with the price of October 16.
