Global crude steel production among the 70 countries surveyed by the World Steel Association (WSA) declined by 1.6% on year in September to sit at 141.8 million tonnes, offsetting the 0.3% rise recorded in August, according to the WSA's latest release issued on October 23.
Last month's result took cumulative output during January-September to 1.37 billion tonnes, also lower by 1.6% compared with the first nine months of last year, according to the WSA data.
During the nine months China, the world's largest steelmaker, produced 746.3 million tonnes, lower by 2.9% on-year. Chinese output accounted for 54.3% of the world's total, slightly lower by 0.3 percentage points than its share in the January-August period, Mysteel Global calculated based on the WSA data.
In September alone, China's crude steel output of 73.5 million tonnes represented at larger on-month decline of 5% compared with the 2.9% retreat in August, continuing the downward trend for the fifth consecutive month, according to the WSA statistics.
One possible reason for the on-month decline was that most steelmakers in North China's Tangshan city – the hub for Chinese steel sector – were mandated by the city government to scale back production during September 19-30 to help reduce atmospheric pollution, as Mysteel Global reported.
On a yearly basis however, the decline in China's September production of 4.6% was the largest on-year among the world's top ten steel-producing countries and widened from the 0.7% on-year dip recorded in August, the WSA release shows.
Among the other top ten global steel producers, Japan, Russia, Germany, South Korea and Brazil also registered on-year drops in their crude steel output last month. On the other hand, India, the world's second-largest steel producer, recorded higher crude steel output in September, with its production jumping by 13.2% on year to reach 13.6 million tonnes, the WSA statistics show. This lifted India's January-September output higher by 10.5% higher on year at 122.4 million tonnes.
The United States still posted steady growth, with its crude steel production in September mounting by 6.7% on year to reach 6.9 million tonnes, while its cumulative output over January-September also edged up by 2.1% to 61.4 million tonnes, according to the WSA release.
