Taiwan's Feng Hsin Steel hold rebar, scrap prices

Feng Hsin Steel, Taiwan's largest rebar producer, has decided to roll over its rebar list prices and procurement prices of local scrap for transactions over October 20-24 to monitor market changes given the stable global scrap prices, according to a company official.

For business discussions till this Friday, the Taiwanese mini-mill continues to offer its 13mm dia rebar at TWD 16,400/tonne ($536/t) EXW, after last week's cut of TWD 300/t, and its buying price of local HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap stays unchanged on week at TWD 7,800/t, the official confirmed.

Prices of global scrap delivered to Taiwan remained stable recently, aggravating the wait-and-see sentiment in Taiwan's steel market, Mysteel Global learned.

As of October 20, the price of US-sourced HMS 1&2 80:20 scrap came in at $300/t CFR Taiwan, unchanged since late September, while that of Japan-origin H2 scrap was reported steady at $315/t CFR Taiwan, taking a pause after the $2/t rise seen in the prior week, according to a local market source.

Although rebar demand from end-users has not seen significant recovery, mini-mills in Taiwan are reluctant to make more concessions in their offering prices, Mysteel Global noted.

In the Chinese mainland, rebar prices continued to weaken as demand from end-users failed to meet market expectations for October, traditionally a peak season for steel consumption at construction sites due to pleasant weather conditions.

On October 20, China's national price of HRB400E 20mm dia rebar was assessed by Mysteel at Yuan 3,217/tonne ($453/t) including the 13% VAT, lower by Yuan 18/t from one week before.

Transactions for construction steel products in the physical market remained dull, with the combined daily trading volume of construction steel comprising rebar, wire rod and bar-in-coil among the 237 trading houses nationwide under Mysteel's tracking averaging 96,105 tonnes/day over October 14-20, slipping by 7.5% compared with the average for October 9-13.
